Jon Snow: “A Complex, Thoughtful and Basically Good Character”
Jon Snow is the “finest creations” of George R. R. Martin in his fantasy novel A Song of Ice and Fire. Jon is one of the main character in the TV Series, Game Of Thrones adaption of George novel. The New York Times has marked this character as one of the most popular characters in the series. Since the first season of the series, Kit Harington wonderfully portrayed the character.
Being the illegitimate son till season 5, the storyline about his birth got a huge twist in the season 5. Jon was introduced in the series as the illegitimate son of the honourable lord of Winterfell, Ned Stark. Unknowingly despite being the illegitimate son, Jon was treated as same as other children to his father Ned Stark.
Jon’s living becomes complicated as he always tries to follow his father’s examples about leadership, selflessness, duty and honour. Till the season 6 he faces hardship to identify himself as a man, a stark and a brother of Night’s Watch. He also becomes predictable to his enemies, as he “fights with honour against opponents who are all too willing to use that predictable morality against him.”, once Laura Prudom suggested on the Variety.
Jon is a prominent point of view character in the novels. His storyline starts with the hardship of him, when he realises that he is an outsider in his own family and sets out for the North for serving the mighty job of Night’s watch. Despite all the hatred from the fellow mates, he proved himself and be friends of everyone. Soon rises to the upper position and became more responsible to save his kingdom. Jon’s loyalty to the Watch and its vows, towards his family and even towards Westeros was tested several times as he was entangled in the fight against wildings from Beyond the Wall to force their return to the seven kingdom.
In the second season, A Clash Of Kings, he coupled with a scouting party to investigate the increasing threat from the white walker beyond the wall. Somehow he managed to force them back into their own way.
In A Strom of Swords he come to know their plans to attack in Westeros and subconsciously fell in love with the aggressive wilding woman Ygritte. But because of his natural leadership and profound love towards his country, he betrays them and Ygritte prior their attack. But the victory comes with a heavy price for Jon. He needs to kill Qhroin with the aid of Ghost. And looses his beloved Ygritte while fighting against the wildings to save the Watch from the attack.
His loyalty to the Night’s watch is now proven and get stronger, despite the tempted offer of being a true Stark from Stannis Baratheon. He gets promotion to the position of Lord Commander.
Jon Snow sends Sam away from Castle Black to protect Watch’s Maester Aemon and Mance’s newborn son from sacrifice by the Red Priestess Melisandre.
Jon works as a negotiator between the Night’s Watch and the wildings in A Dance With Dragons, which increases the terrible adversity of the watch and make him bounded to face the deadly consequences.
Jon Snow is portrayed by Kit Harington on the HBO series Game of Thrones. His storyline follows the character’s plot arc from the novel series, though season 6 of the TV adaptation continued on from the events of Martin’s latest published installment. Harington was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the role in 2016.
